BUILDING37

Building 37 is a first person exploration puzzle game created over the course of 2 semesters by 7 artists and 5 programmers. The game takes place in an abandoned warehouse in Seattle, Washington circa 1967-1983.

The game was meant to utilize cel shading and hard lighting to create a noir visual style . We wanted to keep poly-count low and create as many unique assets as possible. The art team ended up overloading the programming team with assets while the programming team tried to familiarize themselves with the game engine. The mechanics of the final build don’t work very well and the game is difficult to control and tedious to play. I am generally happy with how the game turned out visually, but we never really learned how to get the hard lighting we wanted exactly right in Unity. Unfortunately most students were graduating at the end of the semester so we were unable to spend more time on the game. I would like to optimize the game in Unity, but I think I lost enough sleep over this one.

This project may forever haunt my dreams but I learned so much from our mistakes. I learned about how clashing personalities, delegating work, and, conflicting ideas can affect the development pipeline and the end product. I had to learn to cope with our 9 month development cycle ending in what I considered a catastrophic failure despite me pouring my soul into it; a valuable lesson for every novice developer :)
